Plyometrics
What is it?
Plyometrics is defined as exercises that enable a muscle to reach maximum strength in as short time as possible. This speed-strength ability is known as power.
In simple terms the muscle is stretched before it is contracted
Plyometrics concentrates on decreasing the time it takes the muscles to contract, which will result in more power.
Muscles contract fastest when they are loaded, for example you will be able to jump higher if you crouch down and immediately jump up, compared to starting in the crouch position.
Should I incorporate Plyometrics into my training programme?
Any one looking for strength and explosive power should incorporate Plyometrics into their routine.
In particular Plyometrics can make a huge impact to those who regularly train in Swimming, Ruby, Weight Lifting, Martial Arts, Cycling, Rowing, Football, Tennis, Track & Field sports, skiing, basketball, cricket and Gymnastics.
What are the benefits of Plyometrics?
The major benefits that Plyometrics will bring are:
Stronger joints
Increased speed
Increased upper body strength
Increased lower body strength
Increased flexibility
Increased reactive abilities
Increased explosive strength
Increased jumping abilities
Is Plyometrics another form of Aerobic exercise?
Plyometric training is not intended to develop aerobic capacity.
Plyometrics is an anaerobic form of exercise.
Recovery should be complete between each repetition of exercise and between each set of repetitions.
I want to incorporate Plyometrics into my programme, where to I start?
Plyometric movements should match the movements you encounter in your competition or sport, so therefore need to be designed specifically for individual needs.
We do not recommend undertaking Plyometric training more than 2-3 times a week
